ICDK Seoul: Tailwind for South Korea's hydrogen market
South Korea is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, with a target of reducing emissions by 40% by 2030. Despite a shift in government in May 2022, which brought nuclear energy back into the spotlight, hydrogen remains a core strategic priority for public research and investment.
South Korea’s position as a frontrunner in the hydrogen economy is fueled by massive investments from major conglomerates like Hyundai and SK. This creates a significant opportunity for Danish researchers and companies specializing in Power-to-X (PtX). While South Korea possesses immense capacity for hydrogen utilization, Denmark leads in developing technologies that produce hydrogen cleaner, cheaper, and more efficiently.
The Denmark-Korea Hydrogen Alliance
To bridge these strengths, Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK) Seoul and the Danish Embassy have launched the Denmark-Korea Hydrogen Alliance. This initiative creates partnerships across the entire green hydrogen value chain, connecting Danish PtX expertise with South Korean industrial leaders.
The alliance was kicked off in mid-2022 with participation from over 40 companies and research institutions. Looking ahead, the Green Growth Alliance - a partnership dating back to 2011 - will continue to serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, including high-level ministerial meetings and business delegations.
Explore the Opportunities
To support Danish stakeholders, ICDK Seoul published an Outlook Report on South Korea’s Hydrogen Economy in May 2022. The report provides a deep dive into the national ecosystem and identifies specific collaborative opportunities for Danish research and industry.
The alliance remains open to Danish researchers and companies interested in engaging with key South Korean players to accelerate the global green transition.
